The first pottery forms were bowls and they
served the functional and ritual
needs of daily life. The
human connection with this form is unbroken since
Eden
. Inherent
in the functional requirement of the open form is space and
surface: infinite space to manipulate and surface to decorate.
There is a constant interchange of function and spirit:
one constantly giving way to the other.
Bowls are also tactile.
Bowls feel good because they are in scale with human
anatomy: a large bowl fits the arc of the arm; small bowl in the
palm of your hand. |
